How to Take Notes That You'll Actually Use Later (The Cornell Method)

The Cornell note-taking system explained — the three-section layout, how to fill each part, and why the review step is the part most people skip and shouldn't.

The problem most note-taking systems don't solve

Most notes are written once, during a lecture or while reading, and then never opened again until exam week — at which point they're too disorganized to study from efficiently, so studying starts by rewriting them into something usable. That rewriting step is often the only real learning that happens, and it happens under time pressure instead of when the material was fresh. The Cornell method, developed at Cornell University in the 1950s, is built around eliminating that rewrite by making the notes usable for review from the moment they're taken.

The three-section layout

A Cornell notes page is divided into three regions, set up before note-taking starts:

  • Notes column (roughly the right two-thirds of the page): where the actual lecture or reading notes go, written as normally as they would be otherwise.
  • Cue column (the left third): left blank during note-taking, filled in afterward with keywords, questions, or prompts that correspond to the notes beside them.
  • Summary section (a few lines across the bottom): also left blank during note-taking, filled in afterward with a short summary of the entire page in the student's own words.

The layout can be drawn by hand on any ruled paper — draw a vertical line about a third of the way from the left edge, and a horizontal line a couple of inches from the bottom.

Filling in the notes column

This part is close to normal note-taking: capture the main points, examples, and important details as they come up, without trying to write complete sentences or capture every word. Abbreviations and shorthand are fine here — this section's job is to hold the raw material, not to be polished. Leave some white space between distinct ideas; it makes the page easier to scan later and leaves room for a quick addition if something needs clarifying afterward.

Filling in the cue column (the step that makes this different)

Shortly after the note-taking session — ideally within a day, while the material is still fresh — go back through the notes column and, for each chunk of notes, write a keyword, a question, or a prompt in the cue column that captures what that chunk is about. This step does two things at once: it forces a first pass of active engagement with material that was just passively written down (which is itself a form of the retrieval practice that spaced repetition research shows matters — see the companion article on the spacing effect), and it produces a built-in self-testing tool for later. Covering the notes column and trying to answer each cue from memory becomes a ready-made practice quiz, generated for free as a side effect of taking normal notes.

Filling in the summary

At the bottom of the page, write two or three sentences summarizing the entire page's content in plain language, in the student's own words rather than copied from the notes above. This step is small but does real work: summarizing forces a level of understanding beyond simply having written something down, because vague or half-understood material is hard to summarize accurately. A summary that comes out easily is a good sign the material was actually understood; a summary that's a struggle to write is a signal that section needs more attention before moving on.

The step most people skip

The layout alone doesn't do anything — the value comes from actually using the cue column and summary for review afterward, on a spaced schedule rather than only right before an exam. A five- or ten-minute review shortly after class, covering the notes and testing recall from the cues, is what actually builds retention. Without that step, Cornell notes are just regular notes with extra blank space; the format is a scaffold for review, not a substitute for it.

Why the format is worth the setup

Compared to plain linear notes, the upfront cost is small (drawing two lines, spending a few extra minutes filling in cues and a summary after each session) and the payoff compounds: review sessions become faster because the cue column already highlights what to test, exam prep doesn't start with a disorganized pile of notes that needs to be reorganized first, and the act of writing cues and summaries builds understanding as a side effect of the note-taking process itself, rather than requiring a separate study session to achieve the same thing.
